Julianna Smeltzer

Speech-Language Pathologist

I’m the first author on three of six peer-reviewed journal articles indexed in the NIH National Library of Medicine and have presented my research at international conferences. I serve as lab manager for a federally funded NIH R01 study on voice disorders. I co-lead an international webinar series for speech-language pathology students and have guest lectured nationwide on vocal health for music students. These roles reflect my commitment to advancing clinical care, education, and service in the field of speech-language pathology.

Joyful, Driven, Empathetic

What advice would you give to someone entering your field?

My biggest advice is to never be afraid to make connections. Some of the most important opportunities in my career came from sending a cold email, asking someone about their path, or just showing up with curiosity. Don’t wait until you feel ready to reach out. People in this field are generous with their time, and many want to help. Find a mentor who makes you feel seen and encouraged but also challenges you to grow. You don’t have to do it all on your own, and honestly, you’re not supposed to.
