Chi Omega Fraternity Closes Penn State Chapter
Memphis, TN, February 12, 2014—On February 11, 2014, a team of Chi Omega Fraternity national representatives visited the Nu Gamma Chapter of Chi Omega at Pennsylvania State University. As a result of this recent visit, the Governing Council of Chi Omega has made the decision to close the Nu Gamma Chapter, effective immediately.
The Nu Gamma Chapter of Chi Omega was chartered at Penn State in 1926. The Governing Council recognizes that the Nu Gamma Chapter has a history of achievement in many areas and has numerous outstanding alumnae. Area alumnae and chapter advisors have worked very hard through the years to support the chapter, and the Governing Council greatly appreciates their dedication and time commitment to Chi Omega.
Members of Nu Gamma Chapter have participated in activities that are not congruent with Chi Omega's values and purposes. Chi Omega alumnae volunteers and Executive Headquarters staff members have worked closely with the chapter members to provide the highest level of support in order to move the chapter forward. However, many members did not adhere to the mandated requirements.
"The decision to close a chapter is the most difficult decision the Governing Council faces," said Chi Omega's National President Letitia Fulkerson. "The national organization has worked closely with this chapter on both educational and operational directives, particularly regarding risk management and bystander behavior. Unfortunately, these concerns continue to persist, and the Governing Council must close Nu Gamma Chapter for the safety of our members."
